Kyle Schwarber powered the Philadelphia Phillies past the Atlanta Braves on Thursday night with four home runs, becoming just the 21st player in Major League Baseball history to accomplish the feat. The slugger opened with a solo shot, added a two-run homer and a three-run blast, then belted his 49th of the season in the fifth inning to push Philadelphia to an 18–4 advantage. The outburst moved Schwarber within one homer of the 50-mark and strengthened his lead in the National League’s home-run race. Four-homer games are among the rarest achievements in professional baseball; the milestone had occurred only 20 times before Schwarber’s performance, according to MLB records. The Phillies continued to cruise after the historic display, all but ensuring a blowout win in the series opener at Citizens Bank Park.
