Spike Lee’s ‘Highest 2 Lowest’ Opens on 300 Screens Ahead of Apple TV+ Run

Spike Lee’s latest feature, “Highest 2 Lowest,” began its theatrical run on 15 Aug 2025, opening on roughly 300 U.S. screens with minimal advance marketing from distributors Apple Films and A24. The limited rollout contrasts with Lee’s previous wide releases and comes three weeks before the picture is scheduled to stream on Apple TV+ on 5 Sept. The crime drama stars Denzel Washington as a New York music executive whose business gamble collides with a kidnapping plot, echoing the premise of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 classic “High and Low.” Jeffrey Wright and A$AP Rocky appear in supporting roles. Industry analysts note that Apple’s strategy mirrors recent hybrid release experiments, using a brief exclusive theatrical window to build critical buzz before steering subscribers to its streaming platform.
