Veteran hip-hop DJ Funkmaster Flex said he will air his final program on New York’s Hot 97 at 7 p.m. on Sept. 1, bringing a three-decade tenure at the influential station to a close. Flex, born Aston George Taylor Jr., joined Hot 97 in 1992 and hosted the station’s first dedicated hip-hop show, becoming a fixture of the genre’s rise with his on-air premieres and trademark bomb drops. His run included widely cited moments such as debuting Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “Otis” in 2011. The Bronx native’s departure follows his receipt of a Key to the City from Mayor Eric Adams earlier in August, recognizing his role in expanding New York hip-hop’s reach. Flex said he intends to make the Labor Day broadcast “a great one,” thanking listeners for more than 30 years of support. Hot 97 has not yet announced a successor for the prime evening slot.

This is not a drill. Funkmaster Flex has announced his last show on Hot 97 will be this Monday. A true legend of the airwaves is hanging it up. No more new Flex bombs. https://t.co/4mvDFd7jK2
