The Florida Forest Service said on Tuesday it has achieved full containment of a wildfire that scorched almost 50,000 acres of sawgrass and wetlands in the Florida Everglades west of Broward County. The blaze, which was visible from metropolitan Miami earlier in the week, no longer appears on the agency’s interactive fire map, indicating the perimeter is secure. The fire began on 18 Aug 2025 as two separate lightning-ignited blazes—dubbed the Mile Marker 39 and Sawgrass fires—that merged on 20 Aug. Driven by dry grasses, the flames quickly expanded to roughly 48,000 acres, an area nearly twice the size of Walt Disney World Resort. Containment stood at 60% on 23 Aug, rose to 85% after weekend rain, and reached 95% by Monday as crews used bulldozers and water-dropping aircraft to reinforce control lines. Officials said the remote location—about six miles southwest of Weston—meant no homes or businesses were threatened, although smoke prompted short-lived air-quality advisories for parts of Broward County. With the fire now fully contained, crews are expected to focus on mop-up operations and monitoring for any flare-ups amid forecast summer thunderstorms.
