Entrepreneur and television personality Kevin O’Leary said he has formed a three-person syndicate that paid nearly $13 million for a one-of-a-kind trading card bearing game-used NBA logo patches and autographs of Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant. The 2007-08 Upper Deck Exquisite Collection dual logoman card sold for $12.932 million through Heritage Auctions over the weekend, eclipsing the $12.6 million fetched by a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle in 2022 to become the most expensive sports card ever sold at public auction. O’Leary partnered with long-time collectors Matt Allen and Paul Warshaw to secure the 1-of-1 piece, saying the group created a syndicate so they would not bid against each other and intends to hold the card as part of an index of rare collectibles. He likened the investment to holdings in bitcoin, gold and high-end watches, noting that prices for unique sports memorabilia have “defied recessions.”
