NBA Hall-of-Famer Earvin “Magic” Johnson is spending part of the northern-hemisphere summer aboard WHISPER, a 312-foot superyacht he is chartering at a rate of roughly $1.4 million a week. The vessel, shown in images shared online this week, accommodates 12 guests across seven cabins and comes with a pool, gym, sauna and private cinema. WHISPER was built by Lürssen and changed hands in 2023 when Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shad Khan sold it to former Google chief executive officer Eric Schmidt. At current rates the yacht would cost close to $6 million for a month-long charter, underscoring the scale of spending among wealthy vacationers at the peak of the Mediterranean cruising season. Johnson is not the only NBA legend making waves this summer. Six-time champion Michael Jordan has been spotted off Corfu, Greece, on board his own 65-meter superyacht M’Brace, a vessel Greek media value at about $150 million. The sightings highlight the growing appetite for ultra-luxury yachting among retired athletes and other high-net-worth travelers.
