The Brooklyn Nets have acquired forward Haywood Highsmith and Miami’s 2032 second-round draft pick from the Miami Heat in exchange for a protected 2026 second-round pick, the teams announced. The protection on the Brooklyn pick covers selections Nos. 31 through 55, effectively safeguarding the Nets if the pick lands late in the second round. Brooklyn remains the league’s only team with substantial remaining salary-cap space and has used that flexibility to stay active on the trade market. Highsmith, 28, averaged 4.5 points and 3.2 rebounds in 66 games for Miami last season and is entering the final year of a two-year, $4 million contract. The move gives the Nets another defensive-minded wing while preserving future draft capital. The trade continues an offseason strategy in which the Nets have accumulated draft assets; the club has already added two first-round selections this summer and now controls more combined first- and second-round picks than any other NBA team. Miami, which is operating above the luxury-tax line, gains a nearer-term pick while reducing a marginal salary obligation.
