Philadelphia 76ers rookie VJ Edgecombe made an immediate impact in his professional debut, pouring in 28 points on 13-of-27 shooting as the club opened its schedule at the Salt Lake City Summer League against the Utah Jazz on Saturday night. The 6-foot-6 wing, selected third overall in last month’s NBA Draft, rounded out the performance with 10 rebounds, four assists and two blocks, flashing the above-the-rim athleticism and shot-making that made him a lottery pick. Edgecombe’s production kept Philadelphia within striking distance throughout the second half and drew repeated ovations from the sell-out crowd. While Summer League results carry no bearing on the regular season, the outing offered the 76ers an encouraging first look at a player expected to compete for rotation minutes when training camp opens in the fall.
