Auburn University announced it will retire Cam Newton's No. 2 football jersey on October 11, 2025, during halftime of the home game against Georgia at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Newton, who played for Auburn in the 2010 season, won the Heisman Trophy, led the Tigers to a national championship, and earned multiple honors including Consensus All-American, First-team All-SEC, SEC Offensive Player of the Year, and the Walter Camp Award. He is the fourth player in Auburn football history to have his number retired. Auburn also highlighted Newton's role in the Tigers' 24-point comeback in the 2010 Iron Bowl. Separately, Auburn has officially claimed four additional college football national championships from 1910, 1914, 1958, and 2004, bringing the total number of claimed championships to nine. This move has drawn some debate regarding the legitimacy of the 2004 title.
Auburn has no point to claim 2004, just like the no points they scored against USC in their own crib the year before. https://t.co/Jf8sMfyFVj
