Kansas State University is grappling with an off-field distraction after quarterback Avery Johnson’s father, Mark Johnson, and brother, Anthony Johnson, were filmed fighting in the streets outside Aviva Stadium in Dublin following the Wildcats’ 24-21 loss to Iowa State in the Aer Lingus College Football Classic on Saturday. Witness accounts confirmed that the altercation turned physical but did not lead to any arrests. Video of the brawl circulated widely on social media, drawing unwanted attention to the program as it opened the season 0-1. On Sunday, Mark and Anthony Johnson issued a joint statement through college-sports outlet On3, calling their dispute "senseless bickering" that "escalated into an unnecessary fight." They said they had resolved their differences, accepted full responsibility and extended apologies to Kansas State, its alumni and fans. The family pledged that such an incident "doesn’t happen again." Avery Johnson, who completed 21 of 30 passes for 273 yards and three total touchdowns in the game, has not publicly commented on the matter. Head coach Chris Klieman, addressing only football questions after the loss, defended a late fourth-down call that set up an Iowa State scoring drive.
