Wisconsin opened its season with a 17–0 victory over Miami (Ohio) on Thursday night, but the win was tempered by a non-contact lower-body injury to starting quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. The graduate senior went down in the second quarter after handing off the ball and did not return. He finished 6-of-13 for 68 yards before being ruled out for the remainder of the game. Sophomore transfer Danny O’Neil replaced Edwards and completed 12 of 19 passes for 120 yards, throwing one touchdown and one interception while adding a one-yard quarterback sneak for the game-sealing score with 6:45 remaining. Wisconsin’s offense produced 353 total yards, including 165 on the ground, and snapped a five-game losing streak dating back to last season. The Badgers’ defense delivered a shutout, limiting the RedHawks to 117 yards and forcing two fourth-quarter interceptions by senior safety Preston Zachman. Head coach Luke Fickell said after the game he had no immediate update on Edwards’ condition but noted it was encouraging that the quarterback returned to the sideline in the second half.
