The San Francisco 49ers have released veteran running back Jeff Wilson Jr., according to multiple reports on 26 Aug. The move comes as clubs lock in their 53-man regular-season rosters. Wilson, a versatile back who impressed during the preseason, was initially expected to be considered for a return to the 49ers’ practice squad. By the following day, league sources said Wilson intends instead to join the Miami Dolphins’ practice squad, pending waiver clearance. The six-year pro logged 358 rushing yards and three touchdowns for San Francisco last season. San Francisco also began assembling its own 16-man practice squad. Rookie wide receiver and kick returner Junior Bergen is set to sign once he clears waivers; he was the only member of the club’s 11-player 2025 draft class cut on final roster day. Defensive end Trevis Gipson and rookie defensive tackle Sebastian Valdez likewise plan to join the unit after waivers. Valdez drew interest from several other teams after a strong training camp.
