San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch on Wednesday repeated the club’s backing of second-year kicker Jake Moody, saying management remains confident in the 2023 third-round pick despite renewed scrutiny after a missed extra point in last weekend’s preseason finale. Lynch noted that special-teams staff had tracked every kick during camp and concluded that Moody “had a really good preseason,” missing only one of six point-after attempts and a 53-yard field-goal try. The vote of confidence echoes comments head coach Kyle Shanahan made earlier in the week. Moody is attempting to rebound from a difficult 2024 campaign in which he missed 10 field-goal attempts—five from 40–49 yards and five from beyond 50—while converting 14 of 14 from inside 40. The team brought in veteran Greg Joseph this offseason but released him as injuries elsewhere created roster pressure. Lynch acknowledged that any lingering doubts will persist “until you put them away,” yet said the organization’s belief is rooted in Moody’s performance in practice. The 24-year-old was held out of kicking during Wednesday’s open session and is expected to next appear in the Sept. 7 regular-season opener at Seattle.

Lynch on Jake Moody: "I guess that when you had a season like you did last year, those things are going to be there until you put that away. We have a lot of belief in him. Understand, that last year was rough but that happens in guys careers." 📸 Trinity Machan https://t.co/KvDA7h6yke
