The San Francisco 49ers exited Wednesday’s waiver period without losing any of the 26 players they cut a day earlier and did not submit a successful claim of their own. It is the first time in several seasons that none of the club’s released or waived players were picked up elsewhere. Within hours, the team completed a 16-man practice squad that brings back wide receiver-returner Junior Bergen, defensive tackle Sebastian Valdez, linebacker Curtis Robinson, safety Derrick Canteen, offensive lineman Nick Zakelj and linebacker Jalen Graham. Former Jets quarterback Adrian Martinez was added as the developmental third passer. To restore veteran punter Thomas Morstead to the 53-man roster, San Francisco placed rookie wideout Jacob Cowing on injured reserve, a move that preserves one of the club’s eight return-from-IR designations. The team also reached an injury settlement with rookie running back Corey Kiner, clearing him from injured reserve. General manager John Lynch and coach Kyle Shanahan said offensive linemen Dominick Puni (knee) and Ben Bartch (elbow) are "trending in the right direction" for the Sept. 7 opener at Seattle. Cornerback Upton Stout and running back Jordan James practiced Wednesday, while wide receiver Jauan Jennings remains sidelined by a calf strain. Lynch dismissed speculation of a trade involving Jennings. Lynch additionally voiced support for second-year kicker Jake Moody, noting the club’s “belief in him” after a solid preseason. With most injured players returning and roster spots accounted for, the 49ers shift fully into regular-season preparation on Thursday.
