The San Francisco 49ers have re-signed quarterback Nate Sudfeld, adding the 31-year-old to their depth chart ahead of Saturday’s preseason finale against the Los Angeles Chargers. Sudfeld spent the 2021 season in San Francisco and was released in 2022 after Brock Purdy unexpectedly earned the No. 3 role. He most recently was with the Detroit Lions, where an ACL tear sidelined him two years ago, and did not appear on an NFL roster last season. To make room on the 90-man roster, the club placed running back Patrick Taylor Jr. on season-ending injured reserve after he dislocated his shoulder in last weekend’s win over the Las Vegas Raiders. The move leaves Isaac Guerendo, Jordan James and newly added veteran Jeff Wilson Jr. to share preseason carries and signals confidence in their availability. Sudfeld joins a quarterback group led by Purdy and rounded out by Mac Jones and rookie Carter Bradley, giving head coach Kyle Shanahan a fourth arm for practice and the exhibition finale. Final roster cuts to 53 players are due next week.
