The Indianapolis Colts have chosen Daniel Jones as their starting quarterback for the Sept. 7 season opener against the Miami Dolphins, head coach Shane Steichen confirmed Tuesday. Steichen said Jones will be “the starting QB for the season” and indicated he does not plan to give the 28-year-old a short leash, relegating 2023 No. 4 draft pick Anthony Richardson to the backup role. Jones joined Indianapolis in March on a one-year, $14 million contract after being released by the New York Giants, where he went 2-8 in 10 starts last year. The former No. 6 overall pick impressed coaches with his consistency during training camp, edging out Richardson in a competition that had stretched through the preseason. Richardson, who has battled injuries and uneven accuracy in his first two NFL seasons, acknowledged the decision and said he will “keep working” from the No. 2 spot. The Colts, who have not reached the playoffs since 2020, are banking on Jones’ steadier play to stabilize an offense that also features running back Jonathan Taylor and wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. The move gives Jones a chance to revive his career while leaving questions about Richardson’s long-term future in Indianapolis.

Look at the difference between Daniel Jones and Anthony Richardson. Pretty much sums up the decision the Colts made today (in addition to Richardson’s struggles to stay healthy). https://t.co/Uaxv7pyPWR
