The Philadelphia Eagles bolstered their quarterback depth on Sunday by acquiring Sam Howell from the Minnesota Vikings. Philadelphia receives the 24-year-old passer and a 2026 sixth-round draft pick while sending Minnesota a 2026 fifth-round selection and a 2027 seventh-rounder, according to multiple people familiar with the negotiations. Howell, who started 18 games for Washington in 2023 before brief stops in Seattle and Minnesota, is expected to serve as the primary backup to Jalen Hurts. He has completed 62.6% of his passes for 4,139 yards, 22 touchdowns and 23 interceptions in 20 NFL appearances. The move provides insurance while projected No. 2 Tanner McKee recovers from a finger injury sustained in Friday’s preseason finale. Minutes after finalizing the trade, Minnesota signed veteran Carson Wentz, 32, to back up rookie starter J.J. McCarthy. The former No. 2 overall pick joins his sixth team in as many seasons after spending last year as Patrick Mahomes’s reserve in Kansas City. Wentz brings 94 career starts, 22,410 passing yards and 153 touchdowns to a Vikings depth chart that also includes undrafted rookie Max Brosmer. By flipping Howell, Minnesota upgraded its draft capital and secured a more experienced understudy for McCarthy ahead of the Sept. 8 opener against the Chicago Bears.
