The Minnesota Vikings moved to bolster their receiving corps by finalizing a trade with the Carolina Panthers that brings veteran wideout Adam Thielen back to Minneapolis, people familiar with the negotiations said Wednesday. Under the agreement, Minnesota receives Thielen, a conditional 2026 seventh-round pick and a 2027 fifth-round pick, while Carolina gains a 2026 fifth-round selection and a 2027 fourth-round choice. Neither club has disclosed financial terms, but Thielen is entering the final year of his contract valued at about $8.75 million. Minnesota accelerated talks after losing newcomer Rondale Moore to a season-ending knee injury and seeing No. 3 receiver Jalen Nailor sidelined by a hand issue. Rising star Jordan Addison is suspended for the first three games of the season, and All-Pro Justin Jefferson missed three weeks of camp with a hamstring strain. Thielen, who worked out with rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy this summer, offers an immediate, scheme-savvy target for coach Kevin O’Connell. For Carolina, the move underscores a pivot toward youth around quarterback Bryce Young. The Panthers are expected to rely on recent first-round picks Tetairoa McMillan and Xavier Legette, along with undrafted standout Jalen Coker, as they free up snaps and salary by parting with the 35-year-old receiver. A Minnesota native, Thielen spent nine seasons with the Vikings from 2013-22, amassing 534 receptions—third-most in franchise history—and earning two Pro Bowl selections. He led Carolina with 103 catches for 1,014 yards in 2023 and totaled 151 receptions, 1,629 yards and nine touchdowns over two seasons. His homecoming gives the Vikings an experienced option as they navigate early-season absences and seek to remain competitive in the NFC North.
