North Korea has reportedly established a new cybersecurity unit, Research Center 227, under its intelligence agency Reconnaissance General Bureau (RGB). Operational since March 9, the unit is recruiting approximately 90 experts to develop offensive hacking technologies, including AI-based tools, to target foreign organizations and steal digital assets. Reports from Daily NK indicate that the unit will research Western cybersecurity systems and computer networks to enhance its hacking capabilities. It is also tasked with creating AI-driven tools for espionage, disrupting cybersecurity defenses, and conducting financial theft, including cryptocurrency heists. The establishment of Research Center 227 follows North Korea's history of cybercrime, including the February 21 theft of $1.4 billion from Bybit. The U.S. National Security Agency and the FBI have previously linked North Korea's hacking activities to its intelligence agency RGB. The FBI has also warned U.S. companies about the risks of North Korean IT workers infiltrating remote positions to steal data and extort funds, further highlighting the cybersecurity threat posed by the regime.
