William H. Webster, who led the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 1978 to 1987, has died, the agency announced on 9 August. No cause of death or age was disclosed. Webster headed the FBI during a period of intense focus on public corruption and domestic security, and his tenure is widely credited with strengthening the bureau’s internal oversight mechanisms. The FBI said his "unwavering commitment to justice leaves a lasting legacy" and offered condolences to his family and former colleagues.
