Jerry Adler, the stage-manager-turned-actor best known for playing mob consigliere Herman "Hesh" Rabkin on HBO’s “The Sopranos,” has died at 96. Riverside Memorial Chapel in New York said Adler “passed peacefully in his sleep” on Saturday, a statement confirmed by family representative Sarah Shulman of Paradigm Talent Agency. No cause of death was given. Before stepping in front of the camera in his early 60s, the Brooklyn-born Adler worked on 53 Broadway productions as a stage manager, producer and director, with credits that included the original runs of “My Fair Lady” and “Annie.” His late-blooming screen career spanned more than three decades and featured recurring roles such as law partner Howard Lyman on CBS’s “The Good Wife,” along with appearances in films including Woody Allen’s “Manhattan Murder Mystery.” Adler published his memoir, “Too Funny for Words: Backstage Tales from Broadway, Television and the Movies,” in 2024. He is survived by his wife, Joan Laxman, and their four daughters.
