A fireworks warehouse housed in a multi-storey building on MA Jinnah Road in Karachi’s Saddar district was rocked by an explosion on 21 August, igniting a large fire that sent thick smoke across the commercial hub and shattered windows in surrounding buildings. Hospitals received at least 30 injured people, four of them in critical condition, according to Police Surgeon Dr. Smiya Tarik. The warehouse’s two owner-brothers were among the wounded and are being questioned by police as part of the investigation into the blast’s cause. The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation Fire Brigade dispatched ten fire tenders and a snorkel, while police and paramilitary Rangers cordoned off the area. Chief Fire Officer Humayun Khan said crews had brought 70–80 percent of the blaze under control by late morning and were engaged in cooling operations to prevent reignition. The explosion damaged several vehicles parked nearby, and shards of glass injured passers-by. Authorities have yet to determine what triggered the initial blast, but local shopkeepers reportedly confronted the warehouse owner after the incident as public anger mounted over safety lapses.
