Pakistan has been severely impacted by intense monsoon rains since late June 2025, resulting in widespread flash floods and landslides across the northern and northwestern regions, particularly in the mountainous Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The floods have caused the deaths of nearly 400 people, with official reports citing at least 393 fatalities as of August 21. The Buner district alone has reported over 200 deaths. Rescue operations continue amid ongoing rains, which have hampered efforts and caused additional casualties, including more than 20 deaths in a fresh spell of monsoon rain reported on August 20. Approximately 150 people remain missing, with search teams digging through debris and homes buried under boulders. The disaster has destroyed homes, roads, and bridges, and authorities have issued flood alerts for southern districts as the monsoon season persists. Officials attribute the catastrophic flooding to a rare weather phenomenon known as a cloudburst. The Pakistan military has also been involved in rescue efforts to assist those trapped by the floods.
