Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has relieved Police General Nicolas Torre III from his position as chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP) less than three months after his promotion. The decision was confirmed by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin. Torre, noted for leading the arrests of former President Rodrigo Duterte and televangelist Apollo Quiboloy, was replaced by Police Lieutenant General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr., a graduate of the Philippine Military Academy and the former second-in-command of the PNP. Prior to his relief, there were reports of friction between the PNP and its administrative overseer, the National Police Commission (Napolcom), which exercised its authority to reverse appointments made by Torre weeks before his removal. Despite being relieved as chief, Torre retains his four-star general rank, though only one four-star general can serve in the PNP at a time. President Marcos is reportedly considering Torre for another position. Nartatez, an Ilocano and one of the top contenders for the PNP chief post earlier in the year, has assumed leadership of the PNP following Torre's departure.
