Two Japanese men, aged in their 40s and 50s and from Shizuoka and Fukuoka prefectures respectively, were fatally shot in Manila's busy entertainment district on the night of August 15, 2025. The victims were attacked immediately after exiting a taxi when two assailants approached, demanded they get out, and then opened fire. The perpetrators stole the victims' belongings and fled on a motorcycle, which was later found abandoned about 600 meters from the scene. Local police apprehended two Filipino male suspects, identified as brothers, one of whom was arrested and both subsequently charged. Surveillance footage captured the incident and aided in identifying the suspects. Authorities believe the attack was a planned murder disguised as a robbery, with the suspects reportedly receiving a payment of approximately 23 million yen (900,000 Philippine pesos) from a Japanese national residing in Japan, who is suspected of orchestrating the killing possibly over a financial dispute. The Japanese embassy in the Philippines has urged caution among Japanese nationals and called on the Philippine government to prevent recurrence amid a rise in street robberies targeting foreigners in Manila. The investigation remains ongoing, with police treating the case as a contract killing.
