A new analysis by the Financial Times, drawing on the University of Southern California’s longitudinal Understanding America Study, finds that conscientiousness—the personality trait most closely linked to reliability and self-control—has fallen sharply among U.S. adults under 40 over the past decade. For people aged 16 to 39, average conscientiousness scores have slid from the middle of the national distribution into the low 30th percentile, while older age groups have remained broadly stable. The data also show a rise in neuroticism among young respondents and a fall in extroversion across all age brackets.
