The New Yorker is facing criticism after a trove of deleted social-media posts by staff writer Doreen St. Felix resurfaced this week. Screenshots circulating online show the 33-year-old journalist writing that “whiteness fills me with a lot of hate,” declaring “I hate white men,” and making comments widely interpreted as antisemitic. The messages, most of which date to 2014, re-emerged after St. Felix on 2 August labeled actress Sydney Sweeney an “Aryan princess” in a piece for the magazine. St. Felix deleted her account on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, on 15 August after the posts began to spread on conservative media outlets such as the New York Post and Daily Mail. The controversy has reignited debate over whether mainstream publications apply consistent standards when hiring and retaining writers who have posted racially charged remarks. Condé Nast and The New Yorker have not publicly addressed the matter, and St. Felix could not be reached for comment. Critics are calling for the magazine to explain its vetting process and clarify whether the views expressed in the archived posts violate company policy on workplace discrimination.
The New Yorker tried to destroy the reputation of Flannery O’Connor in 2020 by digging up allegedly racist comments from her personal correspondence. But @NewYorker has nothing to say re: the hundreds of racist tweets posted by their staff writer, Doreen St. Felix. Why is that? https://t.co/aQZ1E7ileZ
What's being relitigated here is the question: "Is anti-white race hatred OK in mainstream media?" The last time we litigated this was in 2018 when the NYT hired a writer named Sarah Jeong to join its editorial board. This was not long after the board withdrew the hire of Quinn https://t.co/lwnKBypfRy
