The Biden administration has announced a significant expansion of gun background checks, aimed at closing the 'gun show loophole.' This move, described as the largest expansion in decades, requires more gun dealers to obtain federal licenses and conduct background checks, regardless of where they sell guns, including online, at gun shows, and in other informal settings. The rule, set to go into effect soon, mandates that gun dealers obtain federal licenses and conduct checks, in alignment with the goals of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act. It is expected to affect nearly 25,000 currently unlicensed dealers. While the rule has been praised for its potential to save lives by keeping guns out of dangerous hands, it has also drawn criticism and is expected to face GOP backlash and legal challenges.

While the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act made historic progress to end our nation's gun violence epidemic - more must be done. My #KellyReport provides crucial next steps for ending this crisis. https://t.co/BtcyEcqbW8
This is HUGE. It will require unlicensed gun dealers to perform background checks and will undoubtedly save lives. It’s exactly why I introduced my bill, the Keeping Gun Dealers Honest Act, to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous individuals. https://t.co/iQGLJweffw
This is a major step for our communities to ensure they are safe. Americans agree: background checks are critical to ensure our neighbors are protected from unnecessary carnage. It is time we pass legislation for universal background checks. https://t.co/fWS3P0p6G9
