Cuba and several of its allies marked the 99th anniversary of Fidel Castro’s birth on 13 August, opening a year of celebrations that will lead into the centenary of the revolutionary leader in 2026. President Miguel Díaz-Canel said Castro “remains a constant, guide and challenge” for the country, adding that his legacy endures despite almost a decade since his death in 2016. Commemorations began at dawn in Castro’s hometown of Birán and extended abroad. A light-projection mural honoring him was unveiled in New York City, Cuban diplomats and Russian supporters gathered at Moscow’s Plaza Fidel Castro, and Venezuela issued an official statement “with profound joy” celebrating the anniversary. Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro described Castro as an “eternal leader” whose example continues to shape regional politics. Organizers in Havana said the day’s events signal the start of a broader program that will culminate in 2026, when Cuba plans nationwide cultural, academic and political activities to mark the 100th anniversary of Castro’s birth.
