Can the grand movie palaces of Westwood Village survive our streaming life? https://t.co/oDBxIpzqcj @MegJamesLAT
Historic movie theaters Westwood Village and Bruin in Los Angeles are set to close this week as Regency's lease ends. The closure marks a significant moment in the decline of traditional movie-going experiences, exacerbated by the rise of streaming services. The Bruin Theatre's future remains uncertain, with some hoping it might be repurposed, potentially by UCLA. The theater could be IMAX capable. This closure is part of a broader trend, with hundreds of malls and theaters shuttering in recent years, including about half of those in the D.C. region. Netflix House is being considered as a potential revival effort for malls.
