Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has urged the club’s hierarchy to sign another central defender after Levi Colwill suffered a season-threatening anterior cruciate ligament injury. Maresca said Colwill’s role at the heart of his 3-2-5 build-up shape is "so, so important" and warned that the only remaining specialist for that position is Tosin Adarabioyo. The Italian dismissed the idea that Benoît Badiashile or Wesley Fofana could step in, recalling that Chelsea changed both players after poor first-half displays last season. “Fofana played 45 minutes in the middle; one of the worst halves from us,” he said, adding that Badiashile was replaced during the Conference League final, which Chelsea went on to win 4-1 after Colwill’s introduction. Maresca also indicated he may seek cover on the left flank and, according to recruitment discussions, winger Alejandro Garnacho is among the targets. Chelsea have already reinforced their attack this summer, but Maresca stressed that the club’s title ambitions will depend on shoring up a defence now deprived of Colwill.
🚨👀 Maresca: “On the left side we have Jamie and Tyrique George, so probably also there we need something”. That player will be Alejandro Garnacho. 🇦🇷 https://t.co/mQ3vDMz8KY
🚨 Maresca insists on new CB: “Fofana played 45 mins in middle of the three, one of the worst halves from us”. “Badiashile… Conference League final, first half, losing 1-0. We changed him with Levi and won 4-1. It's not the same. The one in the middle is so, so, so important”. https://t.co/scpzY1MjFz
