Bayer 04 Leverkusen has completed the free-transfer signing of former Real Madrid right-back Lucas Vázquez, handing the 34-year-old a two-year contract running to June 2027. The Spain international passed a medical in Madrid before travelling to Düsseldorf on Tuesday to finalise the deal and will wear the No. 21 shirt. Vázquez leaves Real Madrid after 18 years with the club, where he amassed 402 first-team appearances and collected 23 major trophies, among them five UEFA Champions League titles and four La Liga crowns. He joins Leverkusen to fill the vacancy at right-back created by Jeremie Frimpong’s move to Liverpool earlier in the summer. Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes said the veteran’s tactical nous and experience at the game’s highest level would make him “a pillar” of Erik ten Hag’s rebuilt squad. The Bundesliga champions have seen several key players depart since lifting the 2024 title and are banking on Vázquez’s versatility down the right flank to steady a reshaped side. Subject to final registration, Vázquez could make his Bundesliga debut on Saturday away to Werder Bremen as Leverkusen begin the defence of their domestic crown.
