Napoli confirmed on Monday that striker Romelu Lukaku suffered a serious tear of the rectus femoris in his left thigh during last week’s 2–1 friendly win over Olympiakos and will undergo surgery in the coming days. The club said the injury is of “high importance” and Italian daily Gazzetta dello Sport estimated the recovery time at a minimum of two months, with some reports suggesting the lay-off could extend to three. Lukaku, 32, contributed 14 goals and 10 assists in his debut season as Napoli won the Serie A title. Coach Antonio Conte is assessing whether to bring in another forward before the transfer window closes, despite the summer arrival of Lorenzo Lucca. Lukaku’s absence will rule him out for the season’s opening phase, including Napoli’s early Champions League fixtures.
