Coinbase has replaced its consumer wallet with the “Base App,” positioning the product as an all-in-one platform for trading, payments, social networking, encrypted chat and third-party mini-apps. The rebrand was announced on 16 July and opens in limited beta, marking the most expansive shift in the exchange’s 12-year history toward a mainstream, multipurpose mobile service. The new application is built on Coinbase’s Ethereum Layer-2 network, Base, and integrates open protocols such as Farcaster for social feeds and XMTP for messaging. Users can post content, tip creators, send near-instant USDC payments, and execute trades without leaving the interface. A smart-wallet architecture allows sign-in with either a new “Base Account” or an existing on-chain identity. Alongside the app, Coinbase rolled out technical upgrades that cut Base’s effective block time to about 200 milliseconds—roughly ten times faster than before—enabling payments to settle almost immediately. The company is pairing the speed boost with “Base Pay,” a one-click USDC checkout that is already available to tens of thousands of Shopify merchants and is slated to support tap-to-pay in U.S. stores later this year. Chief Executive Officer Brian Armstrong said the launch advances Coinbase’s goal of making crypto-based services accessible to a broader audience and reducing reliance on trading fees. By unifying social interaction, commerce and finance on a single, open network, the firm aims to replicate the super-app model that has gained traction in Asia while leveraging blockchain rails for settlement and identity.
