'OpenAI Quietly Designed a Rival to Google Workspace, Microsoft Office' - The Information - $GOOGL $MSFT
BREAKING: OpenAI is developing features to rival Microsoft Office $MSFT and Google Workspace $GOOGL. These new tools aim to enhance document collaboration and chat via ChatGPT, potentially challenging its major investor, Microsoft. #AI #TechNews
OpenAI has developed a suite of unreleased document-collaboration tools for ChatGPT that would place the chatbot in direct competition with Google Workspace and Microsoft Office, according to a report by The Information that cites people familiar with the project. The features—internally referred to as intelligent workspaces—allow users to group chats, upload reference files, use voice mode, and preserve long-term context, effectively turning ChatGPT into a centralized hub for writing, research and planning. Mobile versions are being upgraded to support file uploads and on-the-fly model switching. Sources said OpenAI examined similar functionality in 2024 but lacked the staff to complete it; development has since accelerated. Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman recently described ChatGPT as a potential "life operating system," noting that some users already connect the service to core databases and daily workflows. He added that running the service could require “the world’s most expensive” cloud infrastructure, though the company hopes to offload some processing to users’ devices. A commercial rollout would intensify OpenAI’s rivalry with Google while testing the dynamics of its partnership with Microsoft, the startup’s largest investor and cloud provider, and could significantly raise OpenAI’s computing costs.
