President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of Somalia has announced a comprehensive agreement with opposition members, including former Speakers of Parliament Mohamed Mursal and Sharif Hassan Sheikh Aden, and former Prime Minister Omar Abdirashid. This accord ends a two-month stalemate and is seen as a major step towards peace and democracy in Somalia. Concurrently, Somalia has seen political developments such as the appointment of a new District Commissioner in Mogadishu and the election of a new Speaker of the North Eastern State Parliament, whom the president congratulated. The Speaker of the Parliament, Aadan Madobe, held a meeting with the UN Special Representative for Somalia. Additionally, Somali officials and UN representatives discussed humanitarian responses to the ongoing drought in the country. Somalia is also actively engaging in diplomatic relations, including discussions with Pakistan to strengthen bilateral ties and receiving Sudan’s Intelligence Chief, Lt. Gen. Ahmed Ibrahim Ali Mufaddal, who delivered a message from Sudanese leader Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan reaffirming Sudan’s commitment to bilateral relations. Furthermore, President Mohamud received the UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Shakhboot bin Nahyan, to discuss enhancing cooperation in security and other areas. Separately, in Egypt, President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi hosted UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan in Al Alamein for a multi-day visit marked by expressions of strong bilateral relations and mutual respect, including a notable moment where Sheikh Mohammed drove President Sisi’s car, deviating from protocol. The visit concluded with mutual appreciation statements and Sisi seeing off Sheikh Mohammed at the end of his stay.
