The Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg on 28 August 2025 found former pre-school teacher Amber Lee Hughes guilty of the rape and premeditated murder of four-year-old Nada-Jane Challita, her ex-boyfriend’s daughter. During the trial Hughes admitted she drowned the child in 2023 but denied raping her; the court rejected that defence and convicted her on both counts. Sentencing has not yet been scheduled, but a life term is mandatory for premeditated murder of a minor under South African law.
