The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) News Service celebrated its 75th anniversary on July 17, 2025. Established in 1950, the SABC News aired its first bulletin from the Broadcast House on Commissioner Street, Johannesburg. Over the decades, it has evolved alongside South Africa’s democratic journey, transitioning from an apartheid-era mouthpiece to a trusted public broadcaster reflecting the nation's struggles, triumphs, and changes. The milestone was marked by reflections from veteran journalists and broadcasters including Fakir Hassen, Tim Modise, Ike Phaahla, Krivani Pillay, and others who shared their experiences and memories of working at the SABC. The celebration also highlighted the broadcaster’s role in informing, educating, and inspiring South Africans, with special programming and podcasts commemorating its legacy. SABC Group CEO Nomsa Chabeli emphasized the organization’s continued commitment to serving the public and maintaining its position as a trusted mirror of South African society. The anniversary also featured discussions on the broadcaster’s editorial standards, transformation during political transitions, and its presence in all nine provinces, including the North West region. The event included a look back at historical moments covered by SABC News and the importance of its San radio station for the !Xun and Khwe communities in the Northern Cape.
