San Jose police have arrested casino employee Ellen Mangundayao, 38, and her husband Mark Mangundayao, 41, on suspicion of embezzling hundreds of thousands of dollars in gaming chips from a local casino over several years. Ellen allegedly stole the chips between May 1 and May 22, handing them to her husband, who would cash them out at the casino. Upon arrest, Ellen Mangundayao was found with approximately $4,750 worth of casino chips. Police seized more than $75,000 in cash and about $10,000 in additional chips during searches of two homes in San Jose. The suspects have been booked on felony embezzlement and conspiracy charges. In a separate case, Carmelo Marquez, 42, the former interim chief security officer for the Los Angeles County Employees Retirement Association (LACERA), has been charged with grand theft, conflict of interest, and perjury. Marquez is accused of using his position to secure $120,000 in contracts for his own company, earning nearly $20,000 from these deals. If convicted, he faces up to six years and eight months in state prison. Additionally, a Texas couple, Felix Clark and Esther Amppiaw, have pleaded guilty to federal charges related to a romance scam that defrauded elderly victims across the United States of over $500,000. Clark's sentencing is scheduled for September 10, and Amppiaw's for September 23. Other financial crime cases include a Pietermaritzburg businesswoman accused of defrauding the state of more than R4 million through fraudulent Covid-19 relief claims, and Tienka Abbot, a former Tshwane accountant, who allegedly transferred R11 million into fraudulent municipal accounts. Abbot has been released on R50,000 bail pending further investigation.
