This scam involves cybercriminals stealing personal and banking data through phishing or fraudulent calls, then using this information to access victims' accounts. In the United States, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has highlighted the increased frequency of phishing messages during the holiday shopping season, urging consumers to shop directly from trusted vendors' websites and be cautious of fake ads on social media. Additionally, the New York City Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) has provided tips to protect against holiday scams, including being wary of fake online ads, gift card scams, and delivery scams. The financial stakes are high, with U.S. consumers losing $10 billion to scams last year, a billion more than the previous year.
