Recent reports highlight an increase in online scams, particularly those involving fake links and OTP (One-Time Password) fraud. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns that these scams often initiate through unsolicited WhatsApp messages, luring victims with the promise of small payments. In Spain, a sophisticated network of telephone scams has been uncovered, prompting alerts from local authorities. The Guardia Civil has issued warnings about new scams that can lead to unauthorized charges on victims' bank accounts. Experts emphasize the importance of verifying buyers when selling items online and avoiding sharing verification codes with strangers. Additionally, a viral message on WhatsApp has circulated, warning users about a purported UPI scam that claims scammers can withdraw funds after users check their balance, though experts have confirmed this is not technically feasible. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has also issued guidance on protecting oneself from such scams, which have reportedly led to significant financial losses.
