Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez called for a cross-party, nationwide pact to confront what he described as an accelerating climate emergency, as firefighters continued to battle large wildfires in several regions, including Galicia. Speaking at the wildfire coordination centre in Ourense on 17 August, Sánchez said the agreement should unite all tiers of government as well as scientific, business and labour groups to set out measures for both mitigation and adaptation. The government aims to present the framework for the pact in September. Sánchez argued that Spain must expand prevention and response capabilities to deal not only with increasingly severe forest fires but also with other climate-related disasters, and insisted that political and ideological differences be set aside in favour of evidence-based action.
