Spanish film and television actress Verónica Echegui has died at the age of 42, the Unión de Actores y Actrices confirmed on 25 August. El País reported that the performer succumbed to cancer on Sunday, 24 August, at Madrid’s Hospital 12 de Octubre. Echegui rose to prominence with her starring role in Bigas Luna’s 2006 film “Yo soy la Juani,” earning a Goya nomination for best newcomer. She later expanded into writing and directing, winning the 2022 Goya for best fiction short film with “Tótem Loba.” Her most recent work, the romantic comedy series “A muerte,” premiered this year on Apple TV+ and Atresplayer. Born in Madrid on 16 June 1983, Echegui built a two-decade career spanning cinema, television and theatre. Tributes from colleagues and industry bodies highlighted her versatility and creative drive as news of her death spread across Spain’s cultural sector.
