A recent surge in WhatsApp scams has prompted warnings from law enforcement and cybersecurity experts. The Spanish National Police have arrested 73 individuals linked to a criminal organization that defrauded approximately 2,000 victims out of €2 million through various schemes, including the 'son in trouble' scam and fake dating apps. These scams often involve victims unknowingly providing access to their accounts via malicious links or deceptive messages. In one case, a woman was scammed out of €4,000 after being misled by a false alert regarding her daughter. Authorities are advising users to remain vigilant and to be cautious of unsolicited messages that request personal information or financial assistance.
