Alphabet’s Google and nuclear-technology startup Kairos Power said they will build a 50-megawatt advanced nuclear reactor, dubbed Hermes 2, that will connect to the Tennessee Valley Authority’s grid by 2030. The plant will be located near Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee, with TVA agreeing to buy the electricity under a power-purchase agreement. Google and Kairos will shoulder the financial risk of constructing the first-of-a-kind facility, while TVA secures revenue for its operation through the long-term power contract. The output is expected to supply electricity for roughly 36,000 homes and help power Google data centers in Tennessee and Alabama, advancing the companies’ aims for reliable, carbon-free energy. Hermes 2 is the inaugural project under a broader agreement that could see Google order up to 500 megawatts of Kairos reactors by 2035. Kairos received a construction permit from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission last year and plans to apply for an operating license before start-up.
