Meta Platforms Inc. is in advanced talks to acquire PlayAI, a Palo Alto-based startup specializing in artificial intelligence voice replication technology. Founded in 2019, PlayAI develops real-time conversational agents and voice interfaces designed to create interactions as responsive as natural conversations. This potential acquisition is part of Meta's broader strategy to enhance its AI capabilities and compete more effectively with rivals such as OpenAI and Google. The deal is expected to include both technology and staff, although specific terms have not been disclosed. Meta’s push into voice AI follows its recent $14.3 billion investment in Scale AI and the recruitment of three OpenAI researchers from Zurich, signaling an intensified effort to improve voice features in its products, including its assistant and smartglasses. Meanwhile, NVIDIA has also made moves to strengthen its AI portfolio by acquiring Toronto-based AI startup CentML.
