Fiserv Inc. said it will introduce a U.S. dollar-pegged stablecoin, FIUSD, and a companion digital-asset platform before year-end, giving roughly 3,000 regional and community banks the option to issue their own branded tokens. The coin will be minted on the Solana blockchain using infrastructure from Circle and Paxos, and will be designed to interoperate with other payment coins, including PayPal’s PYUSD. The Brookfield, Wisconsin-based payments processor, which handles about 90 billion transactions a year across 10,000 financial-institution clients and six million merchants, intends to embed FIUSD into its existing banking and merchant software at no extra cost. Compliance tools such as fraud monitoring, risk controls and settlement management will be built in from the outset, the company said. Mastercard on Tuesday joined the effort, announcing it will support FIUSD on its Multi-Token Network and explore using the coin for settlement and “stablecoin-powered” payment cards. The partnership could make the token spendable at more than 150 million merchant locations worldwide and allow businesses to move seamlessly between fiat currency and digital dollars. Fiserv shares rose about 6 percent in early New York trading after climbing 4 percent the previous session, while Mastercard gained around 2 percent. The move by the two Fortune 500 companies underscores the quickening adoption of blockchain-based money in traditional finance as lawmakers advance the GENIUS Act, a bill that would set federal standards for stablecoin issuers.
