Hertz Global Holdings said its Hertz Car Sales division will list pre-owned vehicles on Amazon’s automotive marketplace, marking the rental-car company’s first direct-to-consumer partnership with a major e-commerce platform. Shoppers in Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles and Seattle can browse, finance and complete paperwork on Amazon Autos beginning Wednesday, then pick up the vehicle at a local Hertz location. The service is slated to expand to all 45 Hertz Car Sales outlets across the United States. The collaboration extends Amazon Autos’ push beyond new-car listings—launched last year through a tie-up with Hyundai—into fleet inventory from a national rental company. Hertz, which sells hundreds of thousands of vehicles annually as it refreshes its fleet, said the deal supports its “Back-to-Basics” turnaround plan by broadening online reach and boosting retail margins. Investors welcomed the move: Hertz shares jumped as much as 14% in early New York trading, while used-car retailers Carvana and CarMax fell on competitive concerns. Amazon did not disclose financial terms of the arrangement.
