Sweden’s Baltic Sea island of Gotland experienced a complete loss of electricity on the evening of 23 August, according to local utility Gotlands Energi AB (GEAB). Power failure was followed by a near-total collapse of internet and mobile services, network-monitoring group NetBlocks confirmed. With a population of roughly 60,000, Gotland occupies a strategically important position between the Swedish mainland and the Baltic states. GEAB said the outage stems from an unexplained disconnection of the undersea cable supplying the island’s grid; engineers are investigating and have not provided a restoration timeline.
