New U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminum imports took effect on Monday, doubling the levy to 50% and extending it to 407 additional derivative products. The expansion follows a series of trade measures initiated earlier this year by the Trump administration that targeted shipments from Mexico, Canada and China. Early data suggest the higher duties are filtering through to prices. The U.S. Department of Labor said the producer price index rose 0.9% in July, the sharpest monthly increase in more than three years, lifting the annual gain to 3.3%. Goldman Sachs estimates that American consumers were absorbing 22% of the tariff burden by June and warns the share could climb to 67% by October if current trends hold. Democratic lawmakers argued that the broadened levies, combined with recent spending cuts in the so-called “Big Ugly” budget law, will intensify pressure on household budgets already stretched by higher food, utility and health-care costs. The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
